Abstract Expressionist Painter - Artist Statement

My aim as an Abstract Expressionist is to bypass self-censoring thought and allow other doors to open.
This is the concept behind my work.

It is the ‘formless’… the ‘essence’… the ’sensation’… that intrigues me.  Through gestural movement, gravity and paint, they are captured on canvas and offered as a form of communication to others.

The focus is intense as I choose colour and build composition.  The union of spontaneity and structure are important as I work toward a fine balance, a climax and I allow the painting to take on a life of its own.

The painting pulls and pushes me until it is finished. I feel the sensation in my gut even when I’m far from the studio.  The process can take weeks, it is a pleasurable torment and it won’t let me go until it resonates on its own.

With the canvas on the floor there is no up or down. I’ve let go of all conventional approaches and allowed myself to be open to something much deeper than a physical image.

It is the energy of life itself, the positive and negative forces that act as magnets to create infinite movement and bouncing molecular activity. The atomic mark making is recorded on canvas to later ponder over.

I feel like I’m an inch away from understanding the mysteries of life every time I paint…..
